Director’s Cap

David Lynch, my main man.

Today, I’ll show you what an (hopefully) upcoming director absolutely has to get for himself in order to look super-professional, like the one above:

Apart from the obvious, a Director’s Viewfinder, a good pair of headsets and a megaphone, one thing is surely important - the cap. Now you might wonder what all that fuss is about? Well, during a lot of weird light conditions, a director needs to look into a small screen all the time, or walk around and look at stuff - i.e. his eyes are his greatest tool, hence the cap. Or, it’s just something you wear as a director. A cap is also nice to hide behind. If you bend your head down, wearing one, you are kind of saying “Don’t disturb me. I’m busy being a director!”. I look forward to learn more in that department. Let’s take a look at some fashion statements:

My rough estimate is that 90% of all directors wear a cap or something like it. Here we have Paul Edward Haggis, on the set of “EZ Streets” together with Ken Olin. Haggis’ Crash took me by storm, and I look forward to his next films:

Talking about Million Dollar Baby (Haggis wrote the screenplay - but didn’t direct it), Clint Eastwood Jr. also wears a cap - here’s one from his production company Malpaso:

The Cap-king of them all though, is our very own Steven Allan Spielberg. I’d almost bet that he sleeps with one on:

A rather fancy cap there really, but as we also might learn from all this, many directors also have a lot of hair. And I’m not only talking about Peter Jackson here:

Even though Jim Jarmusch never has a bad hair day, he also wears caps a lot. Film Nevada must be the Nevada Film Office:

Also my main man

Timothy Burton, who also has a few hairs on his head, seem to be more into le French Style:

Francis Ford Coppola likes to wear something a bit different too:

Sofia Carmina Coppola doesn’t seem to wear one at all on the set, but she can wear a suit, nevertheless:

And while we’re at the alternative headwear, Terry Gilliam usually prefers something other than a cap:

Which reminds me of a picture of my kid brother:

And now I am getting rather silly.

  2. He’s a heavy smoker. I think that must qualify as being an “in-between-pacifier”… E]
