All right then…
A bit of a rant:
“Give people what they want” - “It’s what they want” - “We are afraid that this is not what our customers want” - “Our target group analysis says that the segment we’re aiming at want this”.
“Give the people bread and acting (and they will obey you)”
- Julius Caesar
“Turn stone into bread and make some miracles”
- Jesus (I just made this up)
And damn it, that is what people want. Nobody seems to be thinking for themselves any longer. Anything goes. Television is stuffed with so-called documentaries about abnormal babies (bah), people voting each other off on islands, plastic surgery and sports. Entertainment, that offers the slightest bit of insight and requires people to — egad — think for themselves is prioritised down in order to keep the share holders happy. Circulation numbers, audience ratings - all in the name of business. It’s an old story, and frankly I’m getting tired of it.
The problem lies not only in the content - but also in the demand. I’m afraid that yes, that’s what people want. Perhaps life in the Western world has become so stressed we do not want to think for ourselves any longer - we probably can’t. Mental excess is a commodity we cannot afford, but that’s no excuse for not wanting to be critical about what you see and do. I believe more and more that human stupidity will be our downfall. Sorry, it might sound bloody elitist, but there it is. Stupid people are dangerous to your health. Now there’s a slogan for a t-shirt. It might even sell…
