A Wild Haruki Chase

In September 2006, I attended an informal talk held by the Denmark-Japan Society on the subject of translating Haruki Murakami, by the English translator and professor at Harvard University, Jay Rubin. Of course this because I had been an avid fan of Murakami for years, but also because most of the books are translated by [...]

Helge & Krage

For quite a while, I’ve been contemplating a story involving these two guys… I think they need to go on an adventure of some sorts…

There’s a certain slant of light

There’s a certain slant of light,
On winter afternoons,
That oppresses, like the weight
Of cathedral tunes.

Heavenly hurt it gives us;
We can find no scar,
But internal difference
Where the meanings are.

None may teach it anything,
‘T is the seal, despair,–
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the air.

When it comes, the landscape listens,
Shadows hold their breath;
When it goes, ‘t is like the [...]

JPod

Uhh! Douglas Coupland is out with a new book, called “JPod”, [Book web site] a sort of ‘updated’ version of his other work, “Microserfs”, the book that spawned this web site’s name in his honour. I can’t wait to lay my eyes upon it!

Blacksad

I adore comic books. I wish I had a million on a bank account so that I could buy an album or five every day. So even though I don’t actually do that, I simply can’t resist the vivacious style and intriguing “Philip Marlow style”-stories of Blacksad (Juan D??az Canales / Juanjo Guarnido). Not only [...]

Girlfriend in a Coma

»The future is not a good place. It’s cruel. I saw it last night. We were all there: we were older. ‘Meaning’ had vanished. And yet we didn’t know it. I looked at us up close. Our eyes were without souls… like a salmon lying on a deck, one eye flat on the hot wood, the other eye looking straight to heaven.«

Dappled pavement

»The sharp sunshine of early summer dappled the surface of the alley with the hard shadows of the branches that stretched overhead. Without wind to move the branches, the shadows looked like permanent stains, destined to remain imprinted on the pavement forever. No sounds of any kind seemed to penetrate this place. I could almost hear the blades of grass breathing in the sunlight. A few small clouds floated in the sky, their shapes clear and precise, like the clouds in medieval engravings. I saw everything with such terrific clarity that my own body felt vague and boundless and flowing… and hot!«

It’s not all about looks, folks

According to this physical attraction test, which I took today, I apparently seem to favour the physical features similar to the ones found in this type of woman:

[The image do no longer exist]

Although I have a girlfriend, whom I love very much, I couldn’t resist taking the test. It’s weird to see science creep up behind you and bite you in the butt. The report I got was actually very accurate. I was a bit sceptic when I tried it, and it is scary that statistics, biology and math – can reveal the truths behind some of our basic instincts. Anyway, it’s not all about looks, but interestingly enough, that was also pointed out to me in the test:

You are not one to judge people based on their looks. In fact, you’re genuinely drawn to women that others might dismiss. Maybe it’s because you don’t buy into society’s checklist for ‘mainstream’ attractiveness. Instead, you notice unique features like a cute nose, beautiful eyes, or a cute butt, that make some women special in your eyes. For you, attraction is about the total package.

… which reminds me of a Haruki Murakami-quote, from his book “South of the Border, West of the Sun”:

With a very few exceptions, typically beautiful women don’t turn me on. [...] I was always attracted not by some quantifiable, external beauty, but by something deep down, something absolute. Just as some people have a secret love for rainstorms, earthquakes, or blackouts, I liked that certain undefinable something directed at me by members of the opposite sex. For want of a better word, call it magnetism.[...] When I [discover this special magnetism], I want to go up to the girl who radiates this aura and say, “Look, I picked it up. No one else gets it, but I do.”
