Belive in belief

According to a book, I am currently reading, written by the Danish science journalist Tor Nørretranders called ‘At tro på at tro’ (’To believe in belief’), studies have shown that there might be a link between being nice towards other people (including being polite, kissing, cuddling & having sex etc.) and a certain hormone, called Oxytocine that induces close to the same feelings in your brain as if you were taking drugs. Wicked. This could mean that humans have a natural tendency towards being nice towards each other. Nice thought. According to Tor, this and studies with experimental economy could lead us towards a scientific understanding of why religions work as they do. I’m looking forward to read more in this exciting book…

For you Murakami fans out there

My girlfriend found this Haruki Murakami fan site, which seems to be very ambitious about presenting visitors with a lot of information regarding this fabulous writer. If you are a devoted fan, as I am, then you’d probably like to hear that they have a link there where you can download the impossible-to-get, out-of-print Pinballl 1973!!

Art & Beauty

There are some really beautiful things to look at over at Efendi! Marvellous work.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder as they say, even though it is your third eye you sometimes have to use in order to see the true beauty in people. Sadly enough, it is very rare that the three eyes follow each other in terms of determining beauty in all areas. Alas, I’ve met women whom I truly was at ease with and with whom I had a lot in common with. We were almost friends, or sometimes I’ve hooked up with truly beautiful women, but - and this could make me fall on my knees and ask “Why!!!?” - I could simply not fall in love with them. And this bugged me like hell. Then I realised that I have this thing, as my favourite writer Haruki Murakami writes in his novel, “South of the Border, West of the Sun”, and that explains it pretty well:

I was always attracted not by some quantifiable, external beauty, but by something deep down, something absolute. Just as some people have a secret love for rainstorms, earthquakes, or blackouts, I liked that certain undefinable something directed at me by members of the opposite sex. For want of a better word, call it magnetism. Like it or not, it’s a power that ensnares people and reels them in. The closest comparison might be the power of perfume. [snip] And I have the ability from far away, to sniff out those special scents [only meant for me]. When I do, I want to go up to the girl who radiates this aura and say, “Look, I picked it up. No one else gets it, but I do.”

Happy Happy Joy Joy

Normally I wouldn’t post a link to an MP3-file here, but everybody should get the chance to wake up in the morning to this tune (Found the link on Emese’s blog). I think the World would become a slightly better place to live in if everybody woke up with a smile on their faces… [...]

Coupland strikes again

Once more, Douglas Coupland has made me gobble up a book within 24 hours. His latest novel, ‘Hey Nostradamus!’ have just had this effect on me (I just finished it) as with almost all of his books (and I have them all). The only other author who has had this effect on me is Haruki [...]

Worms and books

I think I’ve just gotten myself a new favourite writer. Two books swallowed so far and counting.

Life of a book

Life of Pi. Intriguing indeed, when considering that it is an interactive ‘demo’, or should you rather say ‘ad’ for a book. Found on DIK.

The Eagle’s Shadow

A bloody good article. I hope this book will be a bestseller in America. And the rest of us could just as well learn the ability of being able to “listen” to other countries. Found on CamWorld.
